Statistical Editor, Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology (ICHE)

The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) is seeking applications for a Statistical Editor position for Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology (ICHE) to join as part of the editorial team. ICHE publishes scientifically authoritative, clinically applicable, peer-reviewed research on control and evaluation of healthcare-associated infections, the transmission of pathogens in healthcare institutions and the use of epidemiological principles and methods to evaluate and improve the delivery of care. Major topics covered include infection control practices, surveillance, antimicrobial stewardship, cost-benefit analyses, resource use, occupational health, and regulatory issues.

The Statistical Editor will provide expert, on-demand consultation and review for manuscripts flagged for statistical and quantitative-methods assessment. This role focuses on study design, analysis, and reporting quality; partners with the Editor-in-Chief (EIC) and Associate Editors to ensure the rigor, transparency, and reproducibility of accepted work. The Statistical Editor may also help with refining journal policies and guidance related to statistical reporting. The Statistical Editor will meet monthly with the Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editors (via video conference call) and is encouraged to attend the annual Editorial Board meeting held at IDWeek.

Term of Service

This position is planned to begin in January 2026. An annual editor honorarium is provided.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform in-depth statistical reviews of manuscripts identified by the EIC/Associate Editors as requiring statistical assessment, with timely written feedback and clear, actionable recommendations.
  • Advise editors and authors on revisions that strengthen methodological rigor.
  • Consult on journal policies and guidance related to statistical methods and reporting; propose updates or brief author resources as needed.
  • Invite review papers (1 – 2 per year) from thought-leaders in our field. 
  • Act as a spokesperson and advocate for ICHE with your colleagues, fellows, residents, and other members of your network. 
  • Use your social media channels to promote the journal, encourage submissions, and tweet/retweet about papers you find interesting. 
  • Occasionally, write commentaries or editorials. 
  • Attend monthly Editor Team meetings (virtual) and an annual Editorial Board Meeting at IDWeek (in person). 
  • Adhere to principles endorsed by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE); and preserve the confidentiality and integrity of the review process. 
  • Note: This is a consultative role engaged as needed based on submission volume and topic complexity; it does not manage the full peer-review workflow for general submissions.

Applicant Qualifications

  • Advanced training in biostatistics, epidemiology, or a closely related field and/or demonstrated expertise in statistical methods commonly used in healthcare epidemiology, infection prevention, and antimicrobial stewardship research.
  • Experience with peer review processes (e.g., a reviewer and/or Editorial Board member) 
  • Desire and ability to dedicate allocated time each week to Statistical Editor responsibilities 
  • Ability to participate in monthly editorial team working conference calls 
  • Desire to serve as an ambassador for ICHE through professional networking, social media, and conference attendance. 
  • Professional Membership. Current professional membership in the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America is strongly encouraged.
