Are all individuals with healthcare-associated infections really treated equally?

Reviewed by Steven J. Schweon RN, MPH, MSN, Infection Prevention Consultant

The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) recognize racism as a serious public health threat that impacts infection outcomes, exemplified by COVID-19. As a result, APIC announced the need to identify opportunities to eliminate health inequities and disparities in incidence of healthcare associated infections among historically marginalized communities. Numerous recommendations addressing the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN), partnerships, research, policy, community engagement, and education were developed. APIC also established a “Health Inequality and Disparity Committee” that will be guided by these recommendations.
