The President’s executive order changing childhood vaccine recommendations, signed today and titled “Delivering Gold Standard Childhood Vaccine Recommendations for Americans,” does not reflect current scientific evidence and does not represent the “Gold Standard” in vaccine research. This executive order circumvents available expertise and longstanding processes in the United States for compiling and reviewing safety data before adopting vaccines and their administration schedules. Sound scientific evidence and thoughtful recommendations are required to ensure American children and adults are protected from vaccine-preventable illness. Over many years, FDA-approved vaccines have proven overwhelmingly safe and effective. The science about vaccines and their efficacy has not changed.
The measles resurgence shows us the consequences of delayed or incomplete vaccination. Our nation has recorded more than 2,400 measles cases in 2026 alone, surpassing all of last year in just seven months and making this the worst year for measles since 1991. More than nine in ten of those infected were unvaccinated or had unknown vaccination status, and roughly two-thirds were 19 or younger.
This executive order will deny Americans access to life-saving vaccines, increase vaccine hesitancy, and make America’s children and adults less healthy.
