SHEA Advocates for Responsible NIH Funding Reforms

February 12, 2025

SHEA’s vision of safe healthcare for all is predicated on evidence-based practices discovered and reinforced through rigorous scientific research. Much of this research is performed by academic medical centers that rely on federal funding, including critical support for facilities and administration (F&A) costs mutually negotiated with the federal government and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). While improvements can be made to the current funding allocation system, the sweeping and immediate cap on indirect F&A expenses proposed by the current administration will significantly harm basic and translational medical research. SHEA encourages the federal government to take a gradual and thoughtful approach to reforming the grant award process, ensuring that any changes are implemented systematically and responsibly to uphold America’s leadership in healthcare innovation.
