Electronic Case Reporting: Partner Toolkit (CDC)
CDC, with APHL and CSTE, are working to expand the nationwide scale-up of electronic case reporting (eCR) for COVID-19 with a nationwide effort as part of a strategic initiative called eCR Now. As of December 3, 2020, more than 6,400 healthcare facilities nationwide have implemented eCR and have sent more than 3.9 million COVID-19 electronic initial case reports to 61 public health agencies.

Updated SHEA Recommendations for COVID-19 Vaccination – Practical Guidance for Healthcare Facilities
The FDA advisory panel recommended emergency use authorization for the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine on Dec. 10, with potential for distribution to begin next week.
ACIP identified healthcare personnel and nursing home residents for Phase 1a.
SHEA updated its COVID-19 vaccination recommendations to give healthcare facilities practical and tactical advice for planning and administration:
  • Important info for planning!
    • Facilities must coordinate with their public health offices, who will receive initial allocations.
    • Stagger vaccination within departments/units/critical roles to avoid staffing shortages. A portion of recipients will need to call out afterwards due to systemic reactions and/or fever. Do not vaccinate whole departments/units at once.
    • These vaccines come in multidose vials, which are unfamiliar to some HCP. Train vaccinators and consider lining up pharmacy techs to help. Safe handling of multidose vials is essential.
    • Set up protocols for vaccinators to give recipients the info they need: details for their second dose (they're not interchangeable by manufacturer), how to register for V-SAFE, the safety monitoring system set up for these vaccines that also notifies VAERS, and the EUA fact sheet.
  • Initial shipments may not be evenly distributed across the US to focus on areas with the highest need, but others are expected to arrive rapidly.
  • Due to cold chain and storage requirements, be prepared to administer COVID-19 vaccine doses right away to Phase 1a recipients (HCP and LTC residents) in your purview.
  • On a weekly basis, facilities, including nursing homes, will report to NHSN the COVID-19 vaccines they’ve administered. The module will be available in mid-Dec.
CDC has created a tool kit for facilities to communicate with HCP about COVID-19 vaccination, with fact sheets, posters, and other printables, including stickers for HCP to show they received the vaccine.

Dr. Lee presented this information in the SHEA Dec. 6 Town Hall, available on Soundcloud and LearningCE.
