CDC Questions and Answers Regarding COVID-19 IPC in Healthcare Settings
Representatives from the CDC provided responses to a short list of questions forwarded by SHEA leaders and other collaborating organizations:
Question 1: Are there plans to change mask recommendations (source control) for healthcare personnel when in non-patient facing areas?
Answer 1: CDC continues to modify recommendations for healthcare settings as conditions in the United States evolve and as we gain a broader understanding of the effect of vaccination. Currently CDC recommends healthcare personnel use source control while in a healthcare facility when not using personnel protective equipment. The current post-vaccination healthcare guidance does allow for removal of source control when in separate, non-patient areas and among other vaccinated staff (conference rooms, break rooms). We are discussing expansion of these recommendations as community prevalence continues to fall and as other settings modify their guidance. This is still an area of active discussion and no definitive plans for next steps have been made.
Question 2: Are there plans to change current screening recommendations for healthcare facilities? This process currently has a low yield.
Answer 2: Currently screening is recommended for healthcare settings but alternatives to in-person screening are provided. CDC has proposed updates to the main infection control guidance that are expected to be forthcoming in the near future.
Question 3: Is CDC considering removing the recommendation for gowns and gloves (contact precautions) for patients known or suspected to be infected with SARS-CoV-2?
Answer 3: In light of the lack of evidence on the role contact transmission plays in the spread of SARS-CoV-2 in healthcare settings, CDC is not currently prepared to remove the recommendation for the use of gowns and gloves by healthcare personnel caring for patients with known or suspected SARS-CoV-2 infection. CDC is considering what additional data might be required to inform this decision and considering further input on this issue from other outside experts.
